Our Sound testing procedure is fairly simple and straightforward. Essentially, for party walls there is one type of sound insulation test which is airborne sound test; however for party walls there is a requirement for two types of sound insulation testing – airborne & impact sound testing. Here is a brief description for each type:

Airborne Sound Testing
Airborne Sound Testing is carried out by means of a loudspeaker emitting a steady source of noise on one side of the partition (wall or floor) to be measured. The corresponding sound level is measured on the other side of the partition. Impact sound insulation tests are carried out by means of a tapping machine placed on the floor sample to be measured and the noise measured in the room or space below. Calculations are done based on these measurement and the above mentioned parameters are calculated and compared to the Building Regulations Part E sound insulation requirements for the given type of the building. It is important that the building to be sound tested is completely finished and sealed with no sound leakage through doors and windows. Airborne Sound Testing Equipment
Airborne sound testing is undertaken to walls & floors. Firstly a controlled noise is generated by an amplifier and loudspeaker across a broad range of frequencies. The generated noise is very loud and is often in excess of 100dB. Initial measurements are taken using a class 1 sound level meter within the ‘source room’ followed by further measurements in the ‘receiver room’ on the other side of the wall or floor under investigation. The source room speaker position is then changed and the measurements repeated either side of the partition under test. Thereafter background noise measurements are made using a class 1 sound level meter in the receiving room and are used to apply appropriate corrections for external sound such as traffic noise.

Similarly the reverberation time (the time taken for sound to decay by 60dB) is measured within the receiving room using the sound source and a sound level meter to determine the corrections that must be applied to account for the characteristics and absorptiveness of the room. The difference in the two airborne noise levels (for walls and floors), corrected for background and reverberation characteristics determines the airborne sound insulation performance of the wall, or floor. A greater airborne noise difference between the source room and the receiver room determines a higher airborne sound insulation performance.

The time taken to undertake sound testing varies from project to project as no site is exactly the same. Taking into account standard site conditions a set of tests on houses -two airborne walls will take one to two hours. A six pack of tests on flats – 2 airborne wall tests will usually take between one and two hours, although this is dependent on our engineers having full free uninterrupted access between all the units/rooms under investigation.

Impact Sound Testing
Impact sound testing is undertaken to floors only. This test is different; a calibrated Norsonic ‘tapping machine’ which comprises of five ‘hammers’ driven up and down by a cam and electric motor is used to “tap” the floor surface by applying a known force on the floor structure. The machine is placed in several pre-determined positions. The resulting noise is measured in the dwelling below, using a sound level meter.

Thereafter, background noise measurements are made using a class 1 sound level meter in the receiving room and are used to apply appropriate corrections for external sound such as traffic noise. Similarly the reverberation time (the time taken for sound to decay by 60dB) is measured within the receiving room using the sound source and a sound level meter to determine the corrections that must be applied to allow for the characteristics and absorptiveness of the room.

Impact Sound Testing Equipment
The time taken to undertake the sound testing varies from project to project as no building project is exactly the same. Taking into account standard site conditions a set of tests on houses which consists of two airborne walls will take approx. 1-2 hours. Server Room Integrity Test

If you have a server room that’s protected by fire extinguishment it is required to have an annual Server Room Integrity Test. Protected enclosures such as Data Centres, Server Rooms and Laboratory’s all need to be tested on an annual basis, given the potential consequences of downtime due to fire damage.

Approved standard BS ISO 15004 states that an server room integrity test be undertaken prior to the handover of the enclosure, and annually thereafter. It also states that an integrity test should be undertaken if the room has received new works i.e. new penetrations have been formed through the room envelope to allow for new data/electrical installations; in this instance another room integrity test should be undertaken immediately after the installation works have been completed.

To allow the gaseous fire suppression system to work properly the room must be sufficiently airtight to retain an extinguishing concentration for a specified period after discharge; this is usually10 minutes unless an extended discharge has been designed into the system. If the protected room cannot hold the extinguishment for the minimum retention period, then the fire may reignite causing further damage to critical asset.

Blower Door Integrity Testing

The blower door Integrity Testing, method provides a means of predicting the retention time without the need to release the extinguishing gas. The test methodology is in accordance with the general requirements specified in NFPA 2001, BS EN 15004 and the BFPSA Code of Practice for Gaseous Extinguishing Systems. The fan is positioned within the enclosure access doorway. Pressure and de-pressure airflow measurements are taken, from which the leakage characteristics of the enclosure are established. The predicted retention time is calculated from these leakage characteristics and the enclosure and extinguishing system.

A Blower Door Fan System Undertaking an Integrity Test

Room Integrity Testing can be undertaken to all types and sizes of enclosures, from large data centre’s to small server rooms. In each case we carry out the necessary calculations prior to the test, and use high powered UKAS calibrated blower door fan systems with integrity testing software to determine results immediately upon completion of the room integrity test. Our experienced engineers continually ensure that the room integrity testing is clean and non-disruptive and the room can carry on its normal working operations – there is no requirement for shutdowns to your critical assets.

If your Integrity Test result is less than the required 10 minute retention time then it will result in a test failure. However; thereafter a smoke survey inspection can be carried out to identify all major air leakage paths prior to the undertaking of the remedial sealing works. An air leakage report is issued detailing the results and any recommendations in an easy to follow format. This allows you to undertake remedial sealing works on the day of the test to achieve a test pass.

We understand the importance of protecting your critical assets and as a result our server room integrity testing process is as rigorous and as complete as any other within the industry, using our extensive knowledge of testing Data Centres, Server Rooms and ITU you can be safe in the knowledge that the testing is being undertaken by a UKAS accredited testing laboratory.

We undertake room integrity testing using the latest UKAS calibrated blower door systems. The blower door fan is latched into a fully adjustable cloth door panel that fills the opened door frame space. the enclosure test is undertake by running the calibrated fan at different pressures, thus generating pressure into the protected enclosure from the outside space. By monitoring the pressure differential between the external space to the protected room a series of readings is taken from 10-60Pa on pressurise and depressurise and data inputted to our integrity software; together with added information such as the protected height and the type and weight of gas, i.e. FM200, FE25 etc.

Once the information is logged into the computer the software can then work out the descending interface height hold time, or mixing concentration result. If the protected room is air tight, then a pass should be easily achievable. If the room has too many air leakage paths (and the retention time is less than 10minutes) then it will result in a test failure. To achieve a pass the room will require a smoke test to highlight the air leakage paths, after the smoke survey further sealing works can be undertaken along with a final retest to achieve a server room integrity test pass.
